SETTING A GOAL IS THE FIRST STEP TO ACHIEVING IT

Setting a goal is the first step towards achieving it. Doing nothing is the worst thing a consumer in debt can do. A consumer in debt who does nothing is a banker’s, creditor’s, or collector’s dream. It is their dream because the alleged debt does not get disputed and they ultimately get a “default judgment” against the consumer. The default judgment can legally transform an alleged debt into a judgment which can then result in garnishment and other harsh remedies against the consumer. We urge every consumer in debt to set the goal to become informed, to become proactive, and to assert their consumer rights. We all know the story, those shoes can’t wait, they have to be on your feet tonight, then when you are ready to pay for them the nice person at the checkout counter offers you 5-10-20% off if you get and use their credit card today.

Our advice is to buy the shoes (if your budget allows) and then walk away. Zale’s Jewelry, Office Depot, and Staples, and even Best Buy all have in house credit cards that top 25% and go much higher. That’s more than $700 in interest fees if you only make the minimum payments when you purchase about $1000 dollars, like that new big screen TV. Most department store cards have high interest rates too. So keep on walking until you find a lower interest rate card, or just pay off your balance in full.

That 15% discount on just one item is simply not worth the extra you’ll wind up paying in fees and interest payments. The average credit card interest rate is around 15% so keep those cards, and don’t bother with the others, or better yet, keep your budget and save for those new shoes.
